It was nostalgic even when it first came out, just has a thoughtful suggestiveness to it, the blue collar blues……I responded to the tune as a child, loved it, surely this has to be the purest critique? Funny thing is, that 30 years on, I still like everything about it that I liked as a child. Does that mean the part of us that doesnt age is our awareness or consciousness? Sweet Blessings to all
Brings back memories from eons ago. Thee best American comedy TV show ever. I can remember my first wife never watched it & I would sit at home on my own doubled up in laughter. Pure genius…
Probably my favorite intro… Back around 2005 Fox, or one of the lower channels played two shows starting at 4 AM. I’d DVR them and watch the next day. I haven’t seen this show on since.
@butfulmuzik –Are you sure this wasn’t released in ‘72? I can remember where I was the first few times I heard it, and I’m pretty sure it was in the summer of ‘72.
i LIVED IN A HOUSE THAT hARRY USED TO OWN IN pOINT lOOKOUT,ny FOR A COUPLE YEARS,AND i GOT SOME MUSICAL INSPIRATION FROM THAT EXPERIENCE..hE WAS QUITE AND ENTERTAINER,AND MY FRIEND jOYCE BOTCHFORD FROM FT. MYERS FL.IS ACTIVE IN THE HARRY CHAPIN FOUNDATION,WHICH HELPS THE UNDERPRIVELEGED.hE IS MISSED,B=AND HIS LEGACY WILL CARRY ON FOR MANY YEARS TO COME.
To the love of my life, Susie D.I would have written it differently, but i can’t change what was. I was wrong to take off for the sky. God loves you and so do i. Big Gobs.
you see, it’s not about the artist, it’s about his stories.
@posintent god I may have been right behind you buyin tickets for Chic I never forgot what the guy in front of me said to the ticket seller..”I’d like two tickets to Harry Chapstick” it was funny then
@jlong4u Let me clarify something. I was answering a question on here regarding “Cat’s In The Cradle.” That was the song Sandy collaberated on with Harry, not “Taxi.” My apologies for any confusion that caused. “Taxi” was Harry’s words and music.
That’s quite a revelation if his wife helped him write this song. It takes the imagination straight out of us. Of course, his stories can’t all be real, like most musicians, but I like to imagine his stories are real.
upon stubbling into many of cabs over the years I always felt the need to serenade the cab drivers with this song, they humored me non the less………….which makes this an even more incredible song to me than it is………………have a listen why don’t ya…………..

@FishlegsJones Ohh….I am still laughing!!! Where do you come from??? You are a racist…and Harry wouldn’t like that! Why are you “scared” of black people? Such a shame to live like you..hiding and not knowing what the world is really like. Don’t you know that there are a lot of scary white, red, yellow and brown people? You are missing out on life and love in your little box.
Still have ticket stubs for his performance at the Oakdale Theater in CT the day he died. The following weekend, went to Hampton Beach, NH, and there were wtill posters up for his concert that was schuled there. What a shame..he was the greatest!

terra2055 I too had the honor to have seen him 7 times thoughtout my travels and was extremely fortunate to have met him and the boys once when we presented him with a check for his “World HungerYear” project. Even in the 70’s he realized the need to take care of our own before we worried about the ills of the rest of an ungrateful world. From John Wallaces wide octive range (and humor) to brothers Tom and Steve’s musical talents, to Ken Fields haunting cello and Ron Palmers on lead.

THE REUNION OF TAXI
thumbs up if the theme song make up sleepy
@FLOSKATE100 just use Cab Fare by Souls of Mischief, they sampled this song and made a rap song that is pretty sick.
@AvionDream I totally know what you mean. This theme seemed “nostalgic” even when I was 8 or 9.
damn! Looking at this makes me want to cry!

I wish there was a time machine that could take me back to the late 70’s, I miss the old taxi’s, I miss the people!
@DetectiveBelker Yeah…when did they start playing shows that went off the air last week! Sheesh.
Probably my favorite intro… Back around 2005 Fox, or one of the lower channels played two shows starting at 4 AM. I’d DVR them and watch the next day. I haven’t seen this show on since.
they used to replay this in the 80s, after Saturday-morning cartoons, where i lived. That theme always made me sad because all the cartoons were over.
Please put Taxi on WGN! I have basic cable, and I would love to see that show again. Hell, ya got Cheers on there, put Taxi on!
@DetectiveBelker agreed. I miss those good old shows on nick at nite. Now they always play that crappy show. The Nanny lol why?
idkwhy butt this song helps me sleep at night<3
@DetectiveBelker I miss the good old days when networks made shows like this.
I never watched this show.. I usually just tuned in to listen to the theme song and then I would change the channel LOL!
LOL @ “Medusa” — Amen to that! What do we have to choose from these days? “Survivor” and “America’s Next Top Model”?
It must be against the law to play the “good stuff” anymore….no wonder people stopped watching tv and started watching their computers….duh!!!!

what a quiet unassuming songwriting genius he was, wow.
he was young at the time but his songs had maturity of a 70 year old…
@lightening16 I can see it.

Stunning!
My dad loved this song, I grew up listening to it. Holds a special place in my heart. A true classic that doesn’t get nearly enough play time!
for those you you who need to hear it twice
Does anyone agree that John Mayer kind of resembles Harry….and that maybe he could play him in a movie? Just askin….
@posintent god I may have been right behind you buyin tickets for Chic I never forgot what the guy in front of me said to the ticket seller..”I’d like two tickets to Harry Chapstick” it was funny then
funny the things that stick in your mind ..
@lightening16 It could’ve been a joke you know.

have not listened to harry in some years. but instintly the meloncoly words, thoughts and liyrics are factured off my tongue as if yesterday……
The greatest bands aways die too soon. RIP Harry. You left us enough music for a lifetime.

The word ‘great’ should just be changed to ‘Taxi’
@FishlegsJones Ignorant Racist!
